Berlin, 09. January 2025 – ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE selected terralayr's Mikko Preuß as an expert voice on the importance of battery storage in Germany’s energy system.
Recent market conditions in Germany – ranging from the “Dunkelflaute” in December to a significant surplus of wind power around New Year’s – highlight the inherent volatility of renewable energy. On New Year’s Day, electricity was available on the exchange for around 22 hours at “zero tariff”, while approximately 50 GWh of power had to be curtailed because the grid could not absorb it. That figure corresponds to the daily electricity consumption of almost five million households.
“Large-scale storage facilities such as those operated by terralayr are a crucial piece of the puzzle for the success of the energy transition” says Mikko Preuß, VP Strategy & Commercial at terralayr. They can be built much faster than nuclear or conventional power plants and therefore play a crucial role in stabilizing the grid and reducing price fluctuations.
At terralayr, we are committed to providing greater flexibility to the energy system, enabling a more resilient and sustainable future. Through our platform, we enable higher and more stable returns for battery investors and allow various flexibility off-takers to access flexibly dispatchable capacity on demand.
