Partnership Announcement: Stadtwerke Duisburg Energiehandel and terralayr

Stadtwerke Duisburg Energiehandel and terralayr Cooperate on Battery Energy Storage System BESS Commercialization

  • Combination of energy trading expertise and state-of-the-art infrastructure via the LAYR platform
  • Holistic support for municipal utilities (Stadtwerke): from development and co-investment to BESS marketing
  • Access to new flexibility markets to increase and secure revenue

Stadtwerke Duisburg Energiehandel GmbH, one of Germany's leading municipal energy traders, and terralayr flexibility services GmbH, a flexibility provider, are collaborating to jointly develop and commercialize Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with local municipal utilities (Stadtwerke) across Germany. The partnership combines the extensive trading experience, high reliability, and municipal network of Stadtwerke Duisburg Energiehandel with terralayr's innovative flexibility platform and technical infrastructure.

“The energy transition requires flexible, modern, and efficient solutions from us. Battery storage can significantly contribute to grid stabilization and optimize the use of renewable energy sources. It’s a logical step for us to utilize our energy trading expertise to optimally dispatch these assets. Together with terralayr, we can not only optimize our own facilities but also support partners nationwide in putting their assets to ideal use.”

Says Dr. Michael Arnold, Managing Director of Stadtwerke Duisburg Energiehandel GmbH.

“We are very excited about the collaboration with Stadtwerke Duisburg Energiehandel. Together, we are sending a strong signal for the energy transition and demonstrating how innovative technologies and municipal responsibility can work hand-in-hand.”

Says Philipp Man, Founder and CEO of terralayr.

The cooperation focuses on providing a complete package for municipal utilities that are already active in the BESS market or plan to enter it. The joint offering includes BESS optimization, technical integration, potential co-investments, and support with project development.

Stadtwerke Duisburg Energiehandel will also use the terralayr platform itself to manage a portfolio that is expected to exceed 100 MW in total capacity, including both their own and customer assets. In this context, the terralayr platform acts as a “Plug-and-Play” solution for Stadtwerke Duisburg Energiehandel, providing simple access to a capacity pooling service for balancing power and delivering the entire infrastructure for seamless trading and control of the BESS fleet. Furthermore, Stadtwerke Duisburg Energiehandel can access all of terralayr's exclusive revenue streams to flexibly buy or sell capacity in energy trading, thus maximizing or securing returns.

The new cooperation offers the opportunity to combine the strengths of Stadtwerke Duisburg Energiehandel and terralayr into a holistic solution for BESS projects—from development and financing to commercial optimization. Stadtwerke Duisburg Energiehandel's expertise in the optimization and marketing of complex assets and flexibilities will be combined with terralayr’s flexibility solution. This involves the use of modern in-house developed quantitative methods and algorithmic trading strategies for the cross-market optimization of battery storage. terralayr functions as the infrastructure and ancillary services market access solution. The respective BESS portfolio can be easily integrated into the terralayr platform, which ensures the control and visualization of assets as well as the hedging of balancing power marketing through the capacity pool. By connecting to the flexibility platform, it is also possible to buy or sell storage capacity, both long-term and short-term, to secure trading revenues or generate above-average returns in special market situations.
